Technology and Traffic Control

The US Department of Transportation is currently working on a plan of research and testing intelligent systems in cars and the infrastructure. The goal is to find out the impact these types of systems can have on traffic control, and to see how they can improve driver safety.

Companies like TraffiCalm Systems that produce these kinds of signs should be naturally interested in the use of technology for traffic control. A number of the concepts being looked at in this research are remarkably similar to the driver feedback signs already available. Though the signs and intelligent cars are different things, the psychological effects that change behavior are generally the same.

One of the research areas is the idea of connecting vehicles and letting them community to better keep a check on things like general traffic flow, speed and other problems. Wireless connectivity between vehicles that can alert drivers to problems, dangers and speed is certainly something that could be implemented to promote safety on the roads. This kind of driver awareness is what feedback-offering signs promote, by showing drivers their speeds in relation to the safe and posted speed limits. These can be put into action now, without the risk of leaving those without the technology behind, or forcing many changes to vehicles.

In addition to speed control, feedback systems are planned to alert drivers of hazards ahead of them. The wireless connection can be used to warn drivers of almost any kind of hazards--sudden flooding ahead, a pile-up, a car fire, even police activity in an area that may may make an area hazardous.

Driver feedback signs offer similar benefits as imagined future systems, as do variable speed signs. Wireless Bluetooth connectivity means that information can be gathered quickly (in the case of the feedback signs) and speed limits can be changed on the fly (for programmable signs). This technology is available today, and will still be useful and effective for decades to come.

Road Safety Improves with Technology

TraffiCalm's variable speed signs showcase several innovative and scientifically advanced features that are practical and efficient.

Our one-of-a-kind electronic system that's fully sealed makes installation easy and fast, saving cash and helping you to make roadways safer, faster. The on-board traffic info collection hardware allows for informed, real-time traffic planning. And our signs are entirely programmable, and can be set to follow a schedule or be updated thru a wireless Bluetooth connection.

They can display a single speed, flashing that number or flashing white strobes when that road's speed limit is violated. This is excellent in speed transition areas. They can be programmed to follow a stiff schedule, as can be useful in controlling regular times of traffic congestion.

TraffiCalm's intuitive, straightforward to use programming and data collection software fully fitted with Bluetooth communication abilities. That simply means the information gathered by the radar speed sign (traffic volumes, driver speeds, and even possible vandalism attempts) can be downloaded wireless from up to 30 feet away - USDOT or local municipality officers can gather info from inside their vehicles.

Additionally, Bluetooth communication allows for real time speed limit displays, adjusted to take traffic congestion, roadway conditions, and other factors into account, promoting smoother traffic flow. With TraffiCalm's Bluetooth-enabled software, users can easily configure the display (setting the speed limit and speed violation thresholds), schedule on/off operation times, and download traffic planning information from the sign.

Getting accurate traffic information can be pricey, difficult, and take time and resources that municipalities and cities simply do not have the budget for. However, as TraffiCalm's variable speed signs are promoting safer roads by inspiring driver speed limit compliance, they also gather traffic information. This accurate, real time info allows for better traffic planning for highways and urban roadways.

TraffiCalm variable signs can work in your community as well as they do around the country to help reduce speeding and makes the roads so much safer.
