Up until only recently, only a few folks accepted that taking care of the planet's environment would be mutually advantageous for all of humanity. That's not to say that there was not definite evidence to show the importance of safeguarding the environment, but the masses had still not begun to grasp the magnitude of the situation.
As more scientific evidence started being publicized, about things like the ozone layer, global warming, and the effect of pollution and insecticides, people began to understand. But for the average CEOs in major corporations, that info was not quite enough to change company policies. And the major polluters of the world, the industries, continued to expel large amounts of dangerous pollution into our precious ecosystems.
Companies weren't about to start infringing on their profit margins just so as to please some scientists with their ideas, and companies were not the only ones that were slow in improving their policies.
Executives were reluctant to start talking about new policies that would infringe on the growth of industry.
Nobody wanted to be the first to wave the banner of eco-friendliness just because that would not have done them any good at the time. At the time, there was little market demand for eco-friendly products; at the time there was little regulation. The tragedy of the commons was out of control.
Through education things began changing. Youth started asking their parents how they could help to save the environment, and adults, who never would have cared otherwise, started listening.
The results are astounding. Today there's legislation that restrictions the quantity of worldwide pollution levels, and though lots more must be done, we should be inspired by the amount of accomplishment that has come about due to environmental education.
By continuing to boost and increase environmental education amongst the youth of the world, more and more positive outcomes are sure to result.
