Variable Speed Signs Stop Speeding

By Jessi McCafferty

TraffiCalm has put its cutting edge driver feedback sign technology into a variable speed sign. These signs offer a reasonable cost, ease of programming, on-site and realtime traffic info collection, instant results, and ongoing speed reduction.

Improve work section safety, alert drivers of dangerous road conditions, and make school zones safer. The variable speed sign has been proved effective at encouraging speed limit compliance in speed transition zones, work zones, and more problematic traffic areas.

Variable speed limit (VSL) signs are designed to show the speed limit to drivers. TraffiCalm's VSL signs can be set up to discourage speeders by flashing the limit or a strobe light when it detects speed violations. Different speed limits can be programmed via a fixed schedule or the convenient Bluetooth connection.

In 2008, the Utah Department of Traffic (DOT) conducted a study to test the effectiveness of variable speed limit signs at inspiring speed compliance. They placed several traffic counters, which recorded traffic volume as well as speed, at key intervals along a stretch of highway for a number of months. They installed two VSL signs with programmed schedules, primarily based on week and/or time of the day.

In a three month comparison between a static speed limit sign (65 miles an hour), a VSL sign (65 miles an hour), and a second VSL sign (55 miles an hour during the daytime, 65 miles an hour at night), it was determined the static speed limit signs were the least valuable in preventing speed violators.

The static signs consistently had the best number and most impressive standard deviations from the posted speed limit, while the variable speed signs caught driver attention and encouraged speed compliance, even if the VSL sign asked drivers to slow to 55 mph (as opposed to the rest of the highway's 65 miles per hour limit).

Variable speed signs are the most effective way of promoting road safety for drivers and pedestrians. Crash rates are reduced when instances of speeding are reduced. Survival rates increase as speed decreases.
